Receding Gums (Gum Grafting)
This patient is a young 27 year old female with recession.
She was referred to Dr. Orphanos for a microsurgical gum grafting procedure. The procedure was 100% successful and the roots were completely covered.
Recession results in exposed root surface which is not made up of enamel, but a much softer substance called cementum. This root surface/cementum is prone to decay quite readily, which is why gum grafting to cover the roots was performed.
The gum grafting procedure no longer entails taking the gum graft from the roof of the mouth (palate).
A variety of grafting materials can be purchased, thereby avoiding the need to take the gum graft from the roof of the mouth.
