This patient is a young 27 year old female with recession. She was referred to Dr. Orphanos for a microsurgical gum grafting procedure. The procedure was 100% successful and the roots were completely covered. Recession results in exposed root surface which is not made up of enamel, but a much softer substance called cementum. This root surface / cementum is prone to decay quite readily, which is why gum grafting to cover the roots was performed. The gum grafting procedure no longer entails taking the gum graft from the roof of the mouth ( palate ). A variety of grafting materials can be purchased, thereby avoiding the need to take the gum graft from the roof of the mouth.
All on 4 by Dr. Orphanos: This patient had an old porcelain bridge and he was unhappy with his smile. With his old bridge, the midline of his upper front teeth did not match up with his lip or face. The All on 4 procedure performed by Dr. Orphanos exceeded his expectations. His dental cosmetics, smile, speech, chewing function, lip support and facial support were all dramatically improved with the All on 4 technique!
This patient had a gummy smile after her braces came off. With a minimally invasive gum reshaping procedure, her smile was enhanced. It is not atypical, especially for females to have excessive overgrown gums after braces ( orthodontics). The patient was extremely happy with her smile.
